Characters
May & Cody
It Takes Two is the story of May and Cody — and you play both. Understanding who they are explains why the game forces two-human cooperation instead of one.
A couple at a crossroads
May and Cody are a married couple whose relationship has broken down. They are on the verge of separating, and their daughter Rose is caught in the middle of it. The game opens on that family fracture, not on a battlefield.
Transformed and forced to work together
Through Rose's magic, the two adults are shrunk into small doll-like figures. Stripped of their normal lives, they can only move forward by helping each other through a series of surreal, household-scaled worlds. Every chapter hands May and Cody different tools, so progress depends on both showing up.
Why this needs two players
The characters are written as two people who have stopped listening to each other. The co-op design mirrors that: you cannot solo a puzzle because each role literally cannot do the other's job. Re-learning to communicate is the gameplay, not just the story.
That is also why our walkthroughs stress calling out actions and assigning roles — May and Cody's tools change every chapter, so the pair on your sofa has to re-sync constantly. See the co-op tips for the habits that make this smoother.
Where their story goes
Without spoiling the ending: the seven chapters move from their broken home (The Shed) through fantastical versions of their belongings, and the cooperation the game demands slowly rebuilds the dynamic between them. The chapter hub walks through each world in order.
Spoiler-light note
This page stays clear of late-game plot twists. If you want the full beat-by-beat story, play the chapters — each walkthrough keeps narrative spoilers minimal so you can read ahead without ruining the finale.
